Evolution: A Rapid Flight towards Birds

Remarkable feathered dinosaur fossils have blurred the lines between early birds and their non-avian dinosaur relatives. Rapid skeletal evolution and decreasing body size along one particular lineage of theropod dinosaurs paved the way for the spectacular radiation of birds.

Spinosaurid Dinosaurs from the Early Cretaceous of North Africa and Europe: Fossil Record, Biogeography and Extinction Dinossauros Espinossaurídeos do Cretáceo Inicial do Norte da África e Europa: Registro Fossilífero, Biogeografia e Extinção

We review the fossil records of spinosaurid dinosaurs in order to discuss this group’s evolution and distribution in Europe and North Africa during the Early Cretaceous. Along with their eastern Laurasian distribution during the Cretaceous, these theropods have been found in coastal deposits of Europe and North Africa dated from the Barremian to the Cenomanian. The main occurrences of spinosaur...

Early crocodylomorph increases top tier predator diversity during rise of dinosaurs

Triassic predatory guild evolution reflects a period of ecological flux spurred by the catastrophic end-Permian mass extinction and terminating with the global ecological dominance of dinosaurs in the early Jurassic. In responding to this dynamic ecospace, terrestrial predator diversity attained new levels, prompting unique trophic webs with a seeming overabundance of carnivorous taxa and the e...

Crab nebula of life.

Crabs—those sometimes pesky, hard-shelled beachcombers—are a highly diverse animal, with some 7,000 species found in oceans, lakes, and on land, varying in size from the diminutive pea crab (millimeters) to the giant 4-m wide Japanese spider crab. Tsang et al. (2014) have constructed the most complete and extensive data set to date. Their recalibrated crab gene tree using DNA and mitochondrial ...

Lower limits of ornithischian dinosaur body size inferred from a new Upper Jurassic heterodontosaurid from North America.

The extremes of dinosaur body size have long fascinated scientists. The smallest (<1 m length) known dinosaurs are carnivorous saurischian theropods, and similarly diminutive herbivorous or omnivorous ornithischians (the other major group of dinosaurs) are unknown. We report a new ornithischian dinosaur, Fruitadens haagarorum, from the Late Jurassic of western North America that rivals the smal...
